Cuban Cultural Posters
From the collection of Merrill C. Berman
02.27-03.28.2008
Opening Reception
Wed. Feb. 27, 2008, 5pm-7pm
The Student Center Gallery at Manhattanville College is pleased to present an exhibition of Cuban cultural posters. Poster art proliferated in Cuba
from the 1960s through the 1980s. During this time graphic artists produced posters for a government that supported the arts. A majority of the posters were produced under the auspices of ICAIC (the Cuban Film Institute).
Lincoln Cushing, in his book Revolucion!: Cuban Poster Art, states, "The overthrow of Fulgencio Batista and the immense national transformation that followed led to a "golden age" of Cuban posters. The noncommercial mass poster was the direct fruit of the revolution, a conscious application of art in the service of social improvement."
All of the posters in the exhibition are 29 ¾” x 19 ¾” inches and are printed as silkscreens. Cuban cultural posters are noted for their exquisite use of flat bold color. The posters in this exhibition come from the collection of Scarsdale, New York, resident Merrill C. Berman, who has one of the top private collections of graphic design.
