Academics as Important as Athletics
January 25, 2007
Men's Basketball Coach, Pat Scanlon '03, was profiled in the sports section of the New York Times on January 25th for his dedication to academics and athletics. As a student, Scanlon was kicked off of the basketball team for academic issues. According to the Times, he stated "Academics had always been the source of such problems for me, and this was the worst." He turned his grades around, eventually returning to the team and earning an award for academic distinction. Scanlon's History professor, Lawson Bowling, Ph.D., and his girlfriend at the time, Stefanie Tropea, encouraged and challenged him. Scanlon now challenges his athletes with early morning practices and keeps track of his athletes' attendance in classes. The New York Times article praised Scanlon for "using his story as a real-life example for his athletes."
