Andrew Deacon Discover ThumbAndrew Deacon, a Board of Trustees Scholar, will be graduating from Manhattanville in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History and a minor in French. In spite of being extremely busy with a variety of clubs and activities he has made the Deans List for the past four years. Some of the activities he has been involved with are: Student Representative of the Castle Scholars’ Honors Program, Co-President of End Racism & Sexism Everywhere (ERASE), Supplemental Instructor in the Academic Resource Center, Preceptorial Teaching Assistant, and most recently Orientation Advisor for the Office of Student Activities.

His favorite program is one that he became involved with through the Duchesne Center called Creative Expressions Through Art (CETA). “In this program I work with elementary school kids from White Plains in a combined art history and studio art class,” he said. “A typical class involves the study of a particular style of art with the use of slides. Then the kids will go to the art studio and create a work of art using the style that they learned about. Seeing such young children begin to grasp abstract concepts is really exciting. I think this program is important because not only do they learn about history and art, but it also enhances visual literacy and critical thinking skills as well.”

When asked what he would tell a student considering a major in Art History he said, “A lot of people don’t realize how challenging the study of Art History is, but it is very rewarding as well. The materials that you study and are required to respond to are dense as this major not only embodies history but anthropology, politics, sexuality, gender and religion. I would also tell them that the Art History department here is wonderful and that the faculty really care about the education of each individual student.”

Andrew has recently been accepted as an intern with the Emerging Scholars’ Internship Program (Museum Education), at the Bush-Holley House of the Greenwich Historical Society, in Greenwich, CT. He plans to eventually attend graduate school for Art History and Museum Education and is considering becoming a teacher.
