Congratulations to Catherine Addor who on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, successfully defended her dissertation proposal. The title of Catherine’s dissertation is: PARENT/CAREGIVER ENGAGEMENT AND THE COVID-19 GLOBAL PANDEMIC: LESSONS IN THE CHANGING LANDSCAPE OF K - 12 PARENT/CAREGIVER ENGAGEMENT.

The COVID-19 global pandemic disrupted all aspects of daily life, including education. The sudden shift to virtual and remote learning created new and unexpected challenges for parents and caregivers, who played a more active role in their children's education. Accordingly, there is a pressing need for research to explore the experiences of parents and caregivers during the pandemic and the potential implications for future parent/caregiver-teacher partnerships. The purpose of this proposed narrative inquiry study is to gain insight into the experiences of parents and caregivers during the COVID-19 global pandemic and the ways these experiences may shape future parent/caregiver-teacher partnerships in K-12 schools in the Mid Hudson Valley region of New York. Semi-structured interviews and document analysis will be used as data collection methods to explore the experiences of parents/caregivers and their perceptions of their engagement in their children's education during the pandemic. The study aims to uncover the perceived challenges and barriers faced by parents/caregivers in engaging with their children's education during the period of quarantine and the COVID-19 pandemic, and to examine parent and caregiver perceptions of the overall importance and role of parent and caregiver engagement in their children's education
