Civic Engagement Fall 2024

Dear Manhattanville Community:

As members of our Valiant community, we are committed to upholding Manhattanville University’s mission: to educate ethical and socially responsible leaders in a global community. This mission is particularly important as we prepare for the 2024 Election season and utilizing our democratic process to elect a new President to lead our country.

Our Valiant identity calls on us to be an example for others, demonstrating that learning and constructive, civil dialogue can narrow the deep divisions of political difference. We can have passionate and vigorous disagreements, while still forging deep friendships with those whom we share opposing points of view. It is not easy but that is what makes us Valiant and that’s what makes Manhattanville special.

A University committee of students, faculty and staff have developed the following Valiant Norms to be used before, during and after the 2024 Election.

Valiant Norms:

  • Give others the benefit of the doubt.
  • Listen with curiosity not judgment.
  • Ask informed questions in good faith.
  • Communicate your suggestion thoughtfully and with the intention of being understood.
  • Personal attacks, threats, or intimidation are not acceptable.
  • Speak for yourself using “I” statements.
  • Understand that discomfort is an essential part of the learning process.
  • Take winning off the table. The goal is learning, listening, and understanding.

In addition to the Valiant Norms, members of our community are working hard to develop robust programming during this election year. This work includes but is not limited to:

  • Reviewing relevant policies and community standards as well as educating the campus community about this work.
  • Developing healthy discourse around challenging topics while allowing students to express conflicting views on issues.
  • Encouraging our community to be Valiant and an example to other communities during this election year.

Thank you for your civic engagement and commitment to upholding these important Valiant Norms.

Always Forward, Always Valiant,
