Castle in Summer

Statement from President Sánchez - Standing in Solidarity Amidst Tragedy

October 11, 2023

Dear Manhattanville College Community,

The escalation of violence over the weekend has already claimed the lives of hundreds, both Israeli and Palestinian, leaving countless families shattered and communities in anguish. The toll of this conflict is immeasurable, and my heart aches for all those affected.

At Manhattanville College, our commitment to inclusivity and fostering constructive dialogue across differences is at the very core of our mission and values. This situation calls upon us all to reflect on some of the principles that define our community: empathy, support, dialogue, and unity. In the face of these difficult days, we must hold fast to these tenets, support one another, and ensure that our community remains a safe space for meaningful and respectful discussions.

Our thoughts go out to those who are now living in fear for the safety and well-being of their loved ones in the affected region. For our students who may be struggling with these events, please know that our Counseling Center and our College Chaplains are here to provide support. The Wellness Center on the ground floor of Spellman Hall will offer drop-in counseling sessions on Thursday from 2pm-4pm and Friday from 10am-12pm. Our staff and faculty members can turn to the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for guidance and assistance during these challenging times. Contact Human Resources for details on services offered through our EAP.

Together, as a united community, we can provide comfort and support during these challenging times. The Sister Mary T. Clark, RSCJ Center for Religion and Social Justice is planning activities to help our community process these events, grieve, and show our solidarity in the hopes of peace. Our entire community is invited to join our Chaplains in an Interfaith Candlelight Peace Vigil tomorrow evening. Details below.
