Literacy Education
Literacy Education Program Overview
*This program is taught online
The Literacy Department is committed to helping PK-12 teachers foster optimum literacy achievement in every child. We ground our work in multiple theoretical and research perspectives, with an emphasis on equity and expanding understandings of what it means to be literate across cultures, socioeconomic status, and gender.
The varied and flexible programs offered at Manhattanville create leaders in the teaching of literacy, leading to New York State Certification as a Literacy Specialist. Manhattanville prepares literacy leaders who can work with and help peers to work with the culturally and linguistically diverse, media savvy young people found in today’s classrooms.
The Literacy Department is the editorial team of the New York State Reading Association's annual journal, The Language and Literacy Spectrum. The New York State Reading Association is an affiliate of the International Reading Association. The mission of the New York State Reading Association parallels Manhattanville University's and the Literacy Department's to promote a literate, democratic society valuing lifelong learning for its diverse cultures.
