Literacy Education
Literacy Specialist Program Overview
*This program is taught online
The Literacy Specialist (All Grades) programs at Manhattanville University prepare candidates to support the literacy instruction of learners of diverse backgrounds and proficiency levels while also preparing them for literacy leadership roles in their schools and districts. There are two program offerings: our 30-credit Literacy Specialist MPS or our 45-credit Literacy Specialist and Special Education MPS.
Program coursework focuses on working with all literacy learners from PreK to Grade Twelve, including students with dyslexia, multilingual learners, and students with a variety of strengths and needs. Candidates take courses in multisensory structured literacy instruction and literacy assessment and intervention, along with field-based courses working with young writers and English learners. Candidates grow in their leadership skills, evaluating literacy programs and designing and implementing professional development sessions for fellow teachers. The culminating experience is a practicum where candidates engage in plan-teach-reflect cycles of practitioner research and peer coaching.
Candidates in our Literacy MPS Programs, as well as other educators, can expand their expertise with Advanced Certificates in the Science of Reading and Dyslexia, and Multisensory Literacy Instruction.
