Accelerated Transitional B Certification Pathway
Accelerated Transitional B Certification Pathway Overview
Manhattanville University's Transitional B Certification is an accelerated pathway that leads to a master's degree in education and Initial Teacher Certification in New York in less than two and a half years.
With evening classes and fall start dates, the accelerated Transitional B pathway aims to prepare current teaching assistants on their journey to becoming teachers of record in high-need subject areas. Its goal is to diversify the teaching workforce through an accelerated teacher preparation pathway that provides a top-rated induction model that is fully integrated with the candidates' clinical experiences.
Begin teaching in your own classroom within one year; then, while teaching full time, complete your master's degree and earn New York State Initial Teacher Certification.
Manhattanville's Transitional B is a guided pathway to becoming a teacher in New York while completing requirements for Initial Teacher Certification.
For Teaching Assistants seeking to become full time teachers of record, it means working in a classroom environment at the outset of their studies instead of waiting more than two years to complete a traditional graduate pathway, including student teaching, before obtaining their first teaching position.
Here's why Manhattanville is the ideal path for current Teaching Assistants to pursue a Transitional B Certificate:
- Experienced faculty that provides learning that is experiential, collaborative and interactive
- Students will join a cohort and attend workshops that build cohesiveness throughout the program and provide support while working as Teaching Assistants and in the second year as they assume teaching positions within their district of employment.
- Evening classes, from 4:30 PM to 9:45 PM, make it easier to continue working in the role of Teaching Assistants
- Students will earn a master's degree in Childhood Education (1-6) and Special Education (All Grades) in two years
- During both the first and second year of the program, a Manhattanville mentor will be assigned to conduct ten on-site visits to help develop unit and lesson plans and design classroom management protocols.
- Full and partial scholarship awards for qualifying candidates
Teaching Career Outcomes
Manhattanville's School of Education will work with their partners at Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES and Rockland Teachers' Center Institute to secure a commitment of employment from the current employing district.
Unlike a traditional pathway where candidates wait to complete their graduate degree in education before teaching in New York, the Transitional B pathway enables students to seamlessly Transition from Teaching Assistant to Teacher of Record.
Convenient Evening Classes
Year one of the program is completing a series of graduate courses that prepare students to apply for the Transitional B Certificate with NYSED. Throughout the program, courses are conveniently scheduled, optimal for working Teaching Assistants.
Begin Teaching after First Year
The Transitional B Certificate allows students to teach full-time in paid teaching positions while completing the master's degree and certification requirements necessary for Initial Teacher Certification.
Districts that employ the Teaching Assistant will commit to hiring them as Teacher of Record in the second year of the program.
Complete Your Master’s Degree While Teaching
The remaining courses, less than 50% of the required coursework will be completed as you work in your full time teaching position.
Students in the Transitional B pathway will pursue New York State initial certification and their master's in teaching in Childhood Education and Special Education (Grades 1-6)
Candidates in this program may also pursue a bilingual extension to their childhood education certification by taking the required courses.

When are classes held?
Courses meet in the evenings, with classes held between 4:30 and 9:45.
What is the difference between the Transitional B pathway and the traditional master's in teaching program?
Students in the Transitional B pathway can start teaching in their own classrooms at the start of year 2 of the master's program with a Transitional B Certificate. They can continue their master's degree while teaching full-time. This allows Teaching Assistants to remain in their current positions at the school where they are employed.
In a traditional master's program pathway, students only gain full-time teaching licenses after completing the program, including a student teaching experience as a graduate student. Students in the Transitional B pathway have no student teaching requirement.
Full or partial scholarship awards are available for qualifying candidates. A comprehensive interview, review of academic record and letters of reference, and evaluation of Transcripts will be conducted by Manhattanville staff.
