Education goes beyond the textbooks assigned in schools or the pop quizzes teachers use to track progress — in fact, it extends far beyond school walls. We find education programs virtually in any industry — government, cultural institutions, publishing, non-profits, private schools and day cares, camps and neighborhood centers, media, and startups. The master’s in educational studies program helps professionals in education-related industries maximize their abilities and expertise.

Students complete requirements in two or three years, depending on whether they study part-time or full-time. Coursework spans advanced topics related to the foundations of education, child development, multicultural education, ethics, and the use of technology in educational settings.

Since this program prepares for non-teaching careers, it does not lead to licensure or certification. However, the curriculum does allow students to focus on certain subject areas aligned with their professional aspirations.

The Master of Education in Educational Studies consists of 30 credits. Twelve credits are devoted to core entry-level and capstone courses focused on education. With the guidance of an advisor, students then choose four elective courses tailored to their individual objectives, including a course on educational technologies and a culminating experience involving field experience or research.

What is educational studies?

An educational studies graduate degree helps you understand the field of education through a sophisticated, professional lens. In the program, you develop advanced strategies for improving educational programs and learning environments for children outside of a traditional public school classroom. This includes gaining an in-depth understanding of the role of learning in our society.

Can you teach with an educational studies master’s degree?

You can teach in private schools, charter schools, and educational settings like cultural centers or summer camps. The program also opens the doors to leading training and professional development programs in corporate settings or other adult-focused environments.

To teach in New York State public schools, you must pass a state certification exam and complete a state-approved teacher education master’s program. If you are interested in a traditional teaching career, we encourage you to explore our programs in childhood education, early childhood education, advanced certificates and professional diplomas, and graduate education programs that lead to certification.

I have a teaching license. Does an MEd open career opportunities outside of the classroom?

Yes. In fact, the MEd is specifically designed to equip you with the tools to thrive in roles outside of teaching. Careers in the educational field include administrative or senior-level positions in private schools, charter schools, cultural institutions, childhood centers, higher education, publishing, media, museums, summer camps, government agencies, and much more.

Are internships or professional experiences part of the program?
