Foreign Language Education

Foreign Language Education Program Overview

*This program is taught in a hybrid format

The Teaching of Languages Other than English (LOTE) programs (French, Spanish, Italian, Latin) have received national recognition from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). The preparation of teachers of world languages is important in our increasingly interdependent and multilingual world. Our LOTE programs offer pre-service and in-service teachers opportunities to create integrated curriculum by incorporating the 5C’s of communication, community, culture, comparisons and connections. Our purpose is to prepare teachers who are able to meet the challenges of today’s multilingual and culturally diverse classrooms. The Foreign Language programs prepare teachers to:

  • Have a solid knowledge of language, language acquisition, and culture
  • Have a large repertoire of effective teaching strategies
  • Have an understanding of state and national professional standards
  • Value language and multilingualism
  • Foster integrative learning communities

We also offer a course in Teaching Foreign Language in the Elementary School. This hybrid course enables those certified in teaching a Foreign Language to extend their grades 7-12 certificate to grades K-6, by applying to NYS ED for the extension.
