School Building Leader Certification

Sharpen the theoretical and practical skills required to guide a school to success. Focus on leadership, organizational strategy, data-informed decision-making, finance, pedagogy, and current educational topics in one of our School Building Leader program. The curricula incorporate the New York State standards for SBL certification, preparing you for the necessary exams as you progress through your studies. 

Multiple pathways allow you to choose the best professional path based on your academic and professional background and whether you seek Certification in School Building Leadership and/or School District Leadership. The Master of Professional Studies in SBL requires a bachelor’s degree, while certificate-only pathways are for those with a master’s degree and some teaching experience. 

 

Complete SBL Exams and Required Internships

The SBL degree and certificate programs provide students with rigorous leadership training through hands-on experiential learning. All graduate school leader programs include exam preparation, internships and/or field hours, and test-taking. Students must also produce a professional portfolio and attend New York State-mandated workshops before graduation.

For the MPS and the SBL professional diploma, students complete internships in different sectors from school buildings to the community. While internships are on-site, students attend courses online, allowing them maximum flexibility to balance their studies with their school responsibilities.

Earn a master’s degree while fulfilling requirements for the Certification in School Building Leadership with Manhattanville University’s online SBL certification degree program. Level up your administrative skills and receive comprehensive exam preparation through internships in school buildings and quality fieldwork in school leadership roles. To apply, you must hold a bachelor’s degree and have at least three years of classroom teaching experience (by the end of the program).

 

MPS in School Building Leadership Program Requirements

The Master of Professional Studies in School Building Leadership program consists of 36 credits distributed between eight required courses, three internships, and at least six credits in electives. Coursework covers topics including learning organizations, educational standards, curriculum design, effective teacher supervision, legal issues in education, leadership models, finance, and human resources. 

SBL degree program requirements emphasize practical training and real-world application of knowledge. Before they graduate, they must also attend New York State-mandated workshops they need and present an education leadership portfolio demonstrating their work. As they progress, they fulfill the NYS requirements for sitting for the certification exam.

Admissions to the MPS in Educational Leadership and the Professional Diploma in Educational Leadership programs are open year-round. We review applications on a rolling basis and send decisions a week after receiving a completed application and all supporting material. The spring and fall priority deadlines are a month before the start of the term.

SBL certification admissions include:

• Online application
• Two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a school leader
• Writing assessment
• Interview
• Essay

 

If applying to the MPS, candidates must have:

• Bachelor’s degree 
• Three years of classroom experience (by completion of the program)

 

If applying for the Professional Diploma, candidates must have:

• Master’s degree 
• Three years of classroom experience by the end of the program
