Science Education
Science Education Program Overview
*This program is taught in a hybrid format
The Science program has received national recognition from the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). The Science Education Department prepares undergraduate and graduate students to teach Middle Childhood/Adolescence Education: Biology, Chemistry (Grades 5-12), or Physics (Grades 7-12). Our programs incorporate standards as expressed in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and the science and technology requirements of New York State. Grounded in a philosophy of every child a scientist, we prepare our teacher candidates to deliver inquiry and problem-based instruction in their classrooms to develop critical thinking and empirical reasoning skills for the 21st Century. We emphasize a hands-on, minds-on, active learning approach in the classroom. Through their engagement with science content and methods courses our teacher candidates develop essential strategies for bringing science to life with their students. Our goal is to graduate highly qualified teacher candidates that can implement a constructivist approach to teaching and learning in the classroom using state-of-the-art educational technology. Our teacher candidates are highly qualified in science content area knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge and art of teaching.
