Welcome from the Dean
Welcome to Manhattanville University’s School of Education. I am proud to welcome you to a diverse and inclusive community of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners, all dedicated to fulfilling our mission of educating students to be ethical and socially responsible leaders in a global community. Ever since the University was granted the ability to award undergraduate degrees in 1917, we have been united by an unwavering commitment to ensure the intellectual, ethical, and social development of each student in an environment that is diverse, inclusive, and nurturing. Through an array of bachelor’s, master’s, advanced certificate, and doctoral programs, led by dedicated and experienced faculty mentors, we are preparing educators and leaders to confront and address gaps in educational opportunities and outcomes within and between the communities we serve.
Since the approval of the University’s first Master of Arts in Teaching degree in 1964, our programs, accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), have been designed to prepare you to be change agents in your classrooms, schools, districts, and communities. From undergraduate programs and graduate programs to our flexible online or hybrid cohort graduate programs, we leverage our extensive network of partners to develop and offer programs that integrate theory and practice that will prepare you to address the needs of children, their families, and the communities of which they are a part. For example, our recently launched Dyslexia and the Science of Reading Advanced Certificate program provides students with extensive experience in designing and implementing evidence-based literacy intervention strategies that directly confront scholarly and popular concerns about children’s reading ability.
In line with Manhattanville University’s foundational values and articulated by former
President Dammann, RSCJ in her 1936 speech entitled Principles Versus Prejudices,
we take very seriously our commitment to cultivating an inclusive environment in which
multiple viewpoints are embraced in search of the truth. When you join the School
of Education, you will be welcomed and supported as part of our community of diverse
and engaged learners. We strive to provide personalized guidance, multiple pathways,
a connected and supportive network, and career opportunities that align with personal
goals and support the broader work of becoming change agents in classrooms, schools,
and districts. Along with regularly reshaping our curricular offerings and distinctive
programs to meet the evolving needs of our students, we prioritize collaborating with
the community to create long-lasting partnerships that reach beyond campus. For example,
through our network of Professional Development Schools, we prepare teacher candidates,
provide and support ongoing professional development of educators, and promote student
learning in our diverse and changing suburban communities.
Learn more about our programs, faculty, research areas, and initiatives, and explore
the innovative ways we prepare students to make meaningful impact in the field of
teacher education, leadership, special education, applied behavioral analysis, and
more. Thank you for your interest in the School of Education.

In New York State, each professional license and teacher and school administrator certificate has requirements that candidates must meet in order to be licensed or certified to practice in New York. All undergraduate and graduate programs at Manhattanville leading to licensure or certification have been approved by NYS Education Department as meeting the New York State education requirements for licensure or certification. Licensure and certification may require additional and/or prior coursework, NY State examinations, and/or mandated workshops.
For a list of programs that meet the educational requirements for teacher certification or professional licensure in New York State, see below. Candidates should be aware that NYSED regulations change frequently and that it is the ultimate responsibility of the candidate to be familiar with and to fulfill all of the requirements for licensure or certification. The information the university provides is accurate as of the date of publication. Efforts are made to communicate changes to licensure or certification requirements via Manhattanville email, but it is the responsibility of candidates to remain up-to-date and to meet current requirements. Licensing and certification are at the sole determination of NYSED.
Additional New York State Teacher Certification and ABA Licensure Requirements
In addition to the masters degree or advanced certificate Program, teacher and leader certification or professional licensure requires liberal arts and content core coursework, New York State teacher and/or leader certification exams or licensure exams, teaching and/or leadership experience and/or field experience, and state-mandated workshops. Consult NYSED at or the School of Education office of graduate advising for specific information on the certificates you are seeking.

New York State Liberal Arts Requirements for Teacher Certification
Initial Teaching Certification in most subject areas requires Liberal Arts prerequisites.
These can be completed at any regionally accredited institution of higher education
or non-regionally accredited college with comparable curriculum and standards to those
at Manhattanville. These credits must be reported on an official transcript, and the
students must have earned a letter grade of C or better. Documentation of course content
may be requested. Satisfaction of a content requirement granted by an institution
of higher education reported on an official transcript or official letter, by means
other than coursework, may also satisfy these prerequisites.
Coursework is required in Mathematics, Science, Literature, Foreign Languages (can include American Sign Language), and History. College-level Study is also required in Written Analysis and Expression; Visual or Performing Arts; and Oral Communication (Communication is practice in close and critical reading or research and/or conveying information orally.) Different programs may have more specific and/or additional Liberal Arts requirements. For details, see your individual program plan.
New York State considers Liberal Arts courses to be those that are independent of specific application, theoretical as opposed to practical, and not directed toward a particular career or profession. A course designated as Liberal Arts by a college does NOT automatically qualify.

Credit for Life Experience
Candidates who enter the graduate program with significant life experience in Visual
or Performing Arts, Oral Communication, or Writing, may petition for credit towards
the relevant New York State certification pre-requisite. The petition will consist
of an essay of 3-5 pages and documentation of the experience. This will be evaluated
by the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs, in consultation with appropriate faculty.
Documentation of the experience may take a variety of forms, including, but not limited
to, copies of art work or published writing, recommendation by a mentor, published
reviews, event programs, etc.
New York State Content Core Requirements for Teacher Certification
Every Manhattanville candidate for an initial Teaching Certificate must complete at
least 30 credits in Liberal Arts including at least 18 credits in ONE Liberal Arts discipline. For ALL secondary subjects, Art and Music, the candidate must present at least 30 credits
outside of the Masters in the specific area of certification. For detailed requirements,
see the relevant program plan in the catalog. In certain cases, these courses may
be completed as part of the graduate program. Physical Education also requires specific
pre-requisite courses.
No courses graded Pass/Fail can be accepted for purposes of certification, unless the credit granting policies of the relevant college can be documented.
Determination as to whether a specific course is acceptable in meeting a requirement will be made by the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs, in consultation with the faculty where needed.
New York State Examination and Portfolio Requirements for Certification or Licensure
Candidates for NY teacher or leader certification or professional licensure must achieve
qualifying scores on the specific tests required by NYSED for the relevant subjects
and/or grade levels, including, for teacher certification only, a performance assessment
known as edTPA. Required tests include the Educating All Students Test and one or
more Content Specialty Tests. Required tests for professional licensure include the
BACB ABA exam and the NYS ABA supplemental exam.
Only candidates who are seeking NY State teacher certification and who are not yet certified in New York must prepare and submit the edTPA to the NYS Education Department. Normally, the edTPA will be completed and submitted during the student or supervised teaching semester.
Further information is available from the SOE Office of Graduate Advising, on your program plan, from nystce.nesinc.com, and from edtpa.com.
Field Experience Hours for Behavior Analyst Licensure
Licensure as a Behavior Analyst in New York State requires 1,500 hours of field experience,
of which 225 must be supervised. Supervisors must hold the LBA and BCBA credentials
and must be employed by the agency or school where supervision is taking place. Candidates
can start earning hours from the beginning of the semester in which they take EDU
5643. The college must have a signed letter of agreement with the school or agency
where they will earn hours. Most hours are attached to courses; during that semester,
candidates must complete a specified number of hours for a specified course. Depending
on the conditions of employment, students may still need to complete some field experience
hours after they complete the program. Candidates are strongly urged to consult with
the Coordinator of ABA for information on acceptable hours, locations, recordkeeping,
and overall field experience requirements.
State-Mandated Workshops
NYSED requires all candidates for certification to complete a two-hour seminar on
identifying and reporting suspected child abuse and maltreatment, a two-hour seminar
on school violence prevention and intervention (SAVE), and a six-hour workshop on
Bullying, Harassment, and Cyber-bullying (Dignity for All Students, or DASA), which
must be offered by NYSED-approved providers. Certification in Special Education also
requires a four-hour workshop on autism. Candidates for certification in Childhood
Education must also complete a workshop through the college on Health and Safety.
Proof of completion must be provided to the college. Candidates for professional licensure
must complete a two-hour seminar on identifying and reporting suspected child abuse
and maltreatment.
Fingerprinting
Fingerprinting is required for certification and licensure and is required prior to
doing Field Experience or ABA supervised hours, Student/Supervised Teaching, or ABA
Practicum. Arrange to be fingerprinted for NYSED.
Application for Certification or Licensure
The School of Education will recommend those who have completed a degree or advanced
certificate program and who have met all requirements for certification or licensure,
excepting NYS assessments, for certification of licensure in the area(s) of the degree
or program only. The student must apply online and pay the required NYS fee.
CERTIFICATION IS GRANTED BY NYSED, NOT THE COLLEGE.
